Definitions. Macro vs. Close-up
The term true macro is used where an image of photographed subject projected on the digital sensor (or on the film) is equal in size (1:1) or larger. Close-up range is from 1/10 life size on sensor (1:10).
The terms are often used very loosely. Close-up is used to mean macro and vice versa
Close-up equipment
Various accessories are available to the photographers to get close to their subjects:
- macro lenses
- extension tubes
- teleconverters/diopters/macro filters
One of the main challenges in close-up photography is having photos that are sharp and in focus, so:
- use a tripod
- use a cable release or wireless remote or self timer
- use a "mirror lock-up"
- use a best lenses you can afford
- shoot in your lens’ "sweet spot"
- keep your lenses clean
